UDPS party labels C64 opposition march a failure in DRC

The ruling UDPS/Tshisekedi party has characterized a recent protest march organized by the opposition Coalition Article 64 (C64) as a total failure. The march, intended to defend the constitutional order and oppose potential constitutional changes, saw minimal participation in Lubumbashi, where socio-economic activities continued without disruption.

Augustin Kabuya, Secretary General of the UDPS, stated that the opposition lacks real popularity on the ground and exists primarily through social media manipulation. He noted that police presence outnumbered protesters during the event. In response to the political tension, the UDPS has announced its own nationwide march scheduled for September 22 to support the presidential initiative for national dialogue and a potential referendum.

The political climate remains tense as the country debates constitutional reforms. While the government promotes a national inclusive dialogue, the opposition expresses concerns that changes to the constitution could allow President Félix Tshisekedi to seek additional terms in office beyond the limits currently established by law.
