A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged against Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna for allegedly delivering a hate speech targeting opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. The complaint, filed by Udupi District Congress President Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, claims Suvarna warned that Gandhi’s family lineage would be "destroyed" in a manner likened to the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition and also alleged he called Gandhi "under the influence of drugs round the clock".

The FIR, numbered 103/2026, was registered at Udupi Town Police Station under Sections 57, 192, 196(2), 352, 353(2) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The alleged remarks were made during a public programme organised by the Udupi District BJP.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee Working President Manjunatha Bhandary announced that the party will seek strict legal action and has urged the state Home Minister to ensure swift investigation and prosecution.
