Udupi to upcycle temple flower waste into eco-friendly products
During the 80th Independence Day celebrations in Udupi, Minister Rizwan Arshad announced an ambitious project to upcycle floral waste from over 500 local temples. In collaboration with the V-Care Society, the initiative aims to scientifically collect discarded flowers to produce eco-friendly incense sticks and bamboo-free dhoop sticks, branded as ‘Udupi Sugandha’.
Arshad also highlighted several regional developments, including an increase in subsidies for fishing equipment from ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 and the establishment of a ‘Center of Excellence’ at the Mangalore Fisheries College to promote biotechnology and marine agriculture. The district reported significant fishing production, with 351,893 metric tons produced last year, leading to ₹1,797 crore in exports.
Additionally, the Minister noted Udupi’s academic success, with the district securing first place in the state for PUC exam results. He also touched upon various state welfare schemes, including the Gruha Lakshmi, Shakti, and Gruha Jyoti programs, which have provided significant financial support and transport benefits to women in the region.
