UEFA and CONCACAF discuss joint Nations League for 2028

UEFA and CONCACAF have entered discussions to create a joint Nations League tournament, potentially launching in 2028. The proposed competition would involve 96 national teams from Europe, North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

According to reports from The Guardian, the tournament is designed to mirror the existing multi-league formats of both confederations. It would feature a group stage played during established FIFA international windows in September, October, and November, followed by knockout rounds in March and a final tournament in June. The plan aims to integrate top-tier matchups, such as European giants like Spain, France, and Germany against CONCACAF leaders like Mexico, the United States, and Canada, without adding new dates to the international match calendar.

The initiative is widely viewed as a strategic move to challenge the leadership of FIFA President Gianni Infantino amid ongoing political tensions and controversies regarding commercial rights. While the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has expressed interest in joining the project in the long term, the current focus remains on the UEFA-CONCACAF partnership. The revenue-sharing model of the new tournament is expected to provide significant financial benefits to smaller member associations.
