UEFA blocks controversial VAR rule on simulation after World Cup incidents

UEFA has issued new guidance to its VAR officials, prohibiting the treatment of player simulation as a "player identity" error. The clarification follows an IFAB amendment that allowed referees to correct mis‑identified players when issuing yellow or red cards, a provision that was invoked twice at the 2026 World Cup – first to overturn a yellow card given to Tim Ream and award it to Miguel Almirón, and later to send off Breel Embolo in the Swiss‑Argentina quarter‑final.

UEFA says the rule applies only to genuine identity‑mistake cases and that simulation will remain subject to limited VAR review. European league representatives have warned that a broader application could trigger chaotic, subjective judgments on every yellow card. UEFA also reaffirmed its rejection of a proposed VAR red‑card for players who cover their mouths during verbal disputes.

The governing body will discuss implementation details with officials from its 54 member associations next week.
