UEFA and European Associations Restrict VAR Use for 2026‑27 Season
UEFA and the 55 national football associations of Europe agreed at a meeting in Nyon to limit Video Assistant Referee (VAR) interventions for the 2026‑27 season. The new protocol confines VAR to "clear and obvious" errors involving goals, penalties, direct red cards and cases of mistaken identity, restoring greater authority to the on‑field referee.
IFAB clarified that VAR may correct player identification when a foul is committed by the opposing side, but it cannot change the type of disciplinary sanction. UEFA cited the need to recover two to five minutes of effective playing time per match lost to lengthy VAR reviews and introduced time‑management rules limiting delays on goal‑kicks, throw‑ins, substitutions and injury stoppages.
Roberto Rosetti, UEFA’s chief refereeing officer, emphasized that VAR should only intervene in blatant mistakes to protect referee authority. The meeting also noted that Swiss forward Breel Embolo became the first player sent off under the new mistaken‑identity rule after a VAR review.
