FIFA President Gianni Infantino faces leadership crisis amid confederation backlash FAST-MOVING

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing a significant leadership crisis following the collapse of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal. The plan, which aimed to sell a 21 percent stake in a new commercial entity valued at approximately US$ 20 billion to private investors, was abandoned after intense backlash from major regional governing bodies.

UEFA, CONCACAF, and the AFC have issued a joint open letter accusing Infantino of a “fundamental breach of trust” and a “profound failure of judgment.” The confederations claim the proposal was presented on a compressed timeline to avoid scrutiny and that Infantino has placed himself above the collective interest of the football community. They are demanding an investigation by an independent third party rather than an internal FIFA review.

While the African (CAF) and South American (CONMEBOL) confederations have largely maintained support for Infantino, other regions are deeply divided. US Soccer and Canada Soccer have joined the criticism, creating a rift among the 2026 World Cup host nations. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Football Federation has denied social media reports claiming it called for Infantino's resignation, maintaining a neutral stance.

Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, intends to run for re-election in March 2027. The current controversy has transformed what was expected to be a routine re-election into a contested political battle, with calls for increased transparency and accountability at the highest levels of the sport.
