UEFA launches Clear Line platform to standardize VAR usage

UEFA has launched ‘Clear Line’, a new digital platform designed to standardize the application of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology across European football. The platform serves as a comprehensive video library containing over 150 scenarios to guide referees, players, coaches, and fans on when VAR should and should not intervene.

UEFA’s head of referees, Roberto Rosetti, emphasized that the initiative aims to return the focus to the pitch, stating that VAR should only be used to correct ‘clear and obvious errors’ rather than microscopic details. Rosetti noted that prolonged reviews lasting more than 90 seconds can damage the credibility of the game, comparing the current trend of excessive intervention to a ‘PlayStation’ rather than real football.

In Italy, new guidelines for Serie A and B are also being implemented. Daniele Orsato, the new head of the Italian refereeing commission, echoed these sentiments, advocating for the referee to remain the central authority on the field. The new approach focuses on the ‘clear and obvious error’ principle and aims to improve the speed and consistency of decision-making.
