UEFA introduces new Champions League regulations to curb match delays

UEFA is introducing new regulations for the Champions League aimed at reducing intentional match delays and improving game flow. One significant change allows referees to issue red cards to players who deliberately commit fouls, such as intentional handball, specifically to obstruct the restart of play.

To combat time-wasting, players being substituted must now leave the pitch within 10 seconds. Additionally, players receiving immediate medical attention must remain off the field for one minute once play resumes. Referees will also have the authority to use a five-second countdown during throw-ins and goal kicks if they detect an intent to delay the game.

The updates also include changes to VAR protocols, granting the system the ability to correct certain errors, including instances of incorrect player identification during penalty or disciplinary incidents.
