UEFA introduces new VAR guidelines to limit technology interventions

UEFA is implementing a new approach to Video Assistant Referee (VAR) usage to limit interventions to clear and obvious errors. The goal is to return the focus to the on-field referee and reduce interference in microscopic or marginal situations.

To support this shift, UEFA has launched ‘Clear Line’, an online platform featuring over 150 decision-making scenarios. This library serves as a guide for clubs and fans to understand when technology should intervene. UEFA Chief Referee Roberto Rosetti emphasized the new philosophy, stating, ‘It is football, not PlayStation,’ noting that some previous VAR reviews lacked a connection to the essence of the game.

Rosetti has met with head referees from England, Spain, Germany, France, and Italy, along with the Technical Director of IFAB, David Elleray, to seek a more uniform application of rules across European competitions. The organization aims to ensure that the VAR plays a supportive rather than a primary role in officiating matches.
