UEFA investigates alleged spitting incident in Ireland-Israel match
UEFA has launched a disciplinary investigation into an alleged spitting incident involving an Israeli player and an Irish coaching staff member. The incident reportedly occurred in or around the tunnel during the halftime break of a Nations League match between Ireland and Israel, held on October 4, 2026, in Backa Topola, Serbia.
Damien Doyle, Ireland’s head of athletic performance, alleged he was spat at by an Israeli player. While Irish head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson confirmed the allegation was made, he noted he did not witness the event personally. Conversely, an Israeli representative denied that any spitting occurred.
The match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, took place in a neutral venue behind closed doors following calls for boycotts in Ireland related to the conflict in Gaza. The fixture was marked by significant tension, including Irish players bowing their heads during the Israeli national anthem and a refusal to exchange pennants or handshakes. UEFA has appointed an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector to conduct a formal review of the potential misconduct.
