Aleksander Čeferin to seek fourth UEFA presidency term

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has announced his intention to run for a fourth term, reversing a previous decision to step down in 2027. The announcement was made during a meeting of 55 national associations in Berlin, where member federations had unanimously requested that he reconsider his retirement. If elected at the UEFA Congress in Astana, Kazakhstan, on April 22, 2027, Čeferin could remain in office until 2031, a possibility enabled by statute changes adopted in Paris in 2024.

Simultaneously, UEFA is intensifying its opposition to FIFA President Gianni Infantino. European football leaders are working to identify a candidate to challenge Infantino in the FIFA presidential election, scheduled for March 2027 in Rabat, Morocco. UEFA has outlined that a potential challenger should be a respected, unifying figure with deep football roots. The deadline to officially name an opposition candidate is November 18.

Tensions between the two organizations have escalated due to disagreements over governance and commercial strategies. UEFA is reportedly considering a criminal complaint in Switzerland against Infantino regarding potential financial mismanagement. While most European federations have agreed on a set of reform proposals for FIFA, Azerbaijan has remained an exception.
