UEFA maintains ban on Russian football teams amid ongoing war

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has confirmed that Russian clubs and national teams will not return to international football competitions for the foreseeable future. Despite the International Olympic Committee's recent decision to ease some sanctions, allowing Russian athletes to compete in Olympic qualifications, UEFA remains firm. Ceferin stated that the ongoing war in Ukraine makes a return to European competitions impossible and noted that this stance will remain until the conflict ends.

Ceferin expressed sadness regarding the situation, particularly for young athletes under 18 who have no involvement in political decisions but are denied the chance to compete against the world's best. He emphasized that while it is unfortunate for Russian sportspeople to be sidelined for four years, no other decision can be made given the current circumstances.

In a separate development within athletics, World Athletics has extended the ban on Russian athletes. In response, Russian biathlon legend Dmitrij Wasiljew suggested that the influence of pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva could potentially help advocate for the removal of these sanctions, citing her perceived authority both in Russia and the West.
