UEFA President warns Italy over football governance and Euro 2032 risks
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has issued a warning regarding political interference in Italian football, noting that institutional instability could impact the nation's role as a co-host for Euro 2032.
The crisis involves domestic disputes surrounding the leadership of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and the potential for a government-appointed commissioner to take oversight. Ceferin emphasized that both FIFA and UEFA mandate the autonomy of national sports federations, stating, “Football is not for sale.”
Ceferin cautioned that political meddling undermines the trust necessary to manage major international tournaments. He urged competent bodies to resolve the dispute in accordance with sports legal systems to avoid further aggravating the institutional crisis.
