UEFA rejects FAI request to block matches against Israel

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has requested that UEFA prevent Ireland from being drawn against Israel in future competitions. This follows tensions regarding upcoming Nations League matches scheduled for late September and early October.

UEFA has denied the request to block such pairings, stating that the federation's policy for excluding matchups is based on direct conflicts between nations, noting that Ireland and Israel have no such history. FAI General Manager David Courell confirmed the decision, stating that the European governing body maintains a list of excluded pairs based on geopolitical conflicts rather than social sentiment.

Due to security or logistical concerns, the Irish team's home match in October will be held in Bačka Topola, Serbia, rather than at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, and will be played without spectators. Additionally, Irish supporters have indicated they will not purchase tickets for the earlier match in Debrecen, Hungary.
