UEFA report highlights record spending on youth football talent

A new UEFA report, ‘The Talent and Competition Landscape in European Clubs’, highlights a massive shift in European football toward investing in youth. Clubs spent a record 1.2 billion euros on teenage players this summer, with 56% of total transfer spending directed at players aged 23 or younger. This trend is driven by the dual benefit of immediate on-pitch performance and the potential for significant future asset appreciation.

The report warns of growing inequality within the sport, specifically noting the overwhelming financial dominance of the English Premier League. Last summer, Premier League clubs spent 4.6 billion euros—an amount exceeding the combined spending of the next eight largest European markets. This concentration of wealth and talent poses risks to the long-term sustainability and competitive balance of the European football system.

Amidst this high-stakes market, individual talents are drawing intense scrutiny. Gambian 15-year-old midfielder Antam Zheng, nicknamed ‘The Scorpion’, has emerged as a major prospect. His performances have attracted interest from elite academies, including Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, and Paris Saint-Germain.
