UEFA to introduce Champions League Opening Game in 2027

UEFA is planning structural changes to the UEFA Champions League starting with the 2027/28 season. A new “Opening Game” will be introduced, featuring a single standalone match scheduled for September 7, 2027. This inaugural match is intended to feature the defending European champions, creating a dedicated kickoff event for the new edition. Under this new format, the remaining 17 matches of the first round will be distributed across Wednesday and Thursday.

Additionally, the race for extra qualification spots in the 2027/28 tournament is underway via the UEFA seasonal coefficient ranking. This system awards additional Champions League berths to nations that accumulate the most points across the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. Points are earned through match results and bonus points for advancing through knockout stages, with higher point ceilings available to clubs competing in the Champions League.
