UEMOA Interparliamentary Committee holds 40th extraordinary session in Bamako

The 40th extraordinary session of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) Interparliamentary Committee (CIP-UEMOA) is being held in Bamako, Mali, from September 7 to 11, 2026. The session focuses on regional regulations regarding agricultural input management and the harmonization of pharmaceutical legislation for veterinary products within the UEMOA space.

During the session, Malick Diaw, President of Mali's National Transition Council, received a delegation led by the interim President of CIP-UEMOA, Fononna Cheick Ahmed Coulibaly. The meeting aimed to coordinate the session's proceedings and discuss the committee's role in promoting regional integration.

Niger is participating in the session, a move seen as significant given the country's ongoing efforts to build the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) alongside Mali and Burkina Faso. Niger's involvement suggests that its participation in the AES does not currently imply a total break from existing regional organizations like UEMOA, which provides a critical framework for monetary union, banking regulation, and economic integration.
