Ueno: Visually impaired individual recounts walk using navigation app

A visually impaired individual shared an account of using the navigation app ‘iNavi’ during an early morning walk near Shinobazu Pond and Ueno in Tokyo. The app assists by using a smartphone camera to provide audio descriptions of surroundings, such as tactile paving, buildings, and traffic light statuses via bone conduction earphones.

During the walk, the individual encountered a distressing situation involving loud shouting and running footsteps from a man and a woman nearby. To signal their disability and avoid involvement in the commotion, the individual used their white cane to strike the ground. Despite the tension, the navigation app continued to provide calm, real-time updates, eventually announcing arrival at the destination.
