Joshua Van retains UFC flyweight title after defeating Alexandre Pantoja

At UFC 331 in Los Angeles, Joshua Van successfully defended his UFC flyweight title by defeating Alexandre Pantoja via unanimous decision in a five-round rematch. The bout earned both fighters ‘Fight of the Night’ bonuses. Following the victory, Van’s position in the UFC pound-for-pound rankings rose to 6th, while Pantoja dropped to 14th.

In the wake of the loss, MMA legend Demetrious Johnson suggested that Pantoja, 36, should consider retirement, noting that the former champion has already defeated most top contenders and may have reached a ‘no-man’s land’ where only newcomers remain.

Manel Kape, currently ranked No. 2 in the flyweight division, has emerged as the top contender and is expected to challenge Van for the title, potentially in early 2027. Kape has expressed confidence in the upcoming matchup, stating he intends to make the fight look effortless.

Regarding the event's physical demands, California State Athletic Commission data revealed significant weight fluctuations for the main event fighters. Joshua Van weighed 125 pounds at the official weigh-ins but fought at 145.8 pounds, while Pantoja fought at 140.2 pounds.
