UFC fighter compensation and media rights shifts

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is facing renewed scrutiny regarding fighter compensation as athletes explore alternative financial opportunities. Former middleweight champion Sean Strickland has reportedly expressed interest in boxing Jake Paul, a move that highlights the potential for combat sports athletes to seek higher earnings outside of the promotion.

Simultaneously, the UFC is undergoing a significant shift in its media distribution model. Following the merger of WWE and UFC under TKO Group Holdings, the promotion has transitioned from a pay-per-view model to a streaming-centric approach. A seven-year media rights deal with Paramount+ allows U.S. subscribers to access UFC cards and Fight Nights without additional pay-per-view fees. This deal, which averages $1.1 billion annually, aims to increase viewership by reducing the financial barrier for fans who previously found the cost of following the sport prohibitive.
