UFCG and Funasa launch AI water management system
The Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG) and the National Health Foundation (Funasa) have introduced GISÁGUA, an intelligent management model for water supply systems. Developed by UFCG’s Interdisciplinary Group for Environmental Sanitation (GISA), the technology utilizes sensors, data transmission, and artificial intelligence to provide remote and automated monitoring of water quality and quantity in rural communities.
The system is designed to help managers identify operational failures, supply risks, and changes in water quality—such as residual chlorine, total coliforms, and E. coli—more rapidly. To date, 43 pieces of equipment have been tested in rural areas of Paraíba and Ceará.
The project initially launched with an investment of R$ 1 million. A pending request for an additional R$ 980,000 aims to expand and improve the technology, which could bring the total investment to R$ 1.98 million. The developers intend for GISÁGUA to be a scalable solution applicable to water supply systems throughout Brazil.
