Ufes launches first Medicine class in São Mateus

The first class of the Medicine course at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes) in São Mateus has officially begun. The inaugural group consists of 61 students representing 12 different Brazilian states, including Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and others.

Authorized by the Ministry of Education in July 2025, the program is hosted at the North Espírito Santo University Center (Ceunes). The initiative aims to expand higher education access and healthcare professional training in the northern region of the state. The curriculum will involve practical activities at the Roberto Silvares State Hospital and local basic health units.

For local residents, the program offers the opportunity to pursue medical studies at a free federal institution without leaving their home region. The inaugural lecture was delivered by Professor Lucia Campos Pellanda from the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (UFCSPA).
