Uffizi Galleries announces €50 million renovation project

The Uffizi Galleries in Florence have announced an ambitious two-year transformation project estimated to cost approximately €50 million (nearly $58 million). The initiative aims to renovate, restore, and restructure various spaces within the museum complex, including the Gallery of Statues and Paintings, the Pitti Palace, and the Boboli Gardens.

Key components of the project include upgrading infrastructure such as climate-control and air treatment systems, as well as a €12 million restoration of façades and roofs. Within the Uffizi Gallery, plans involve creating a new introductory area for the museum’s collections, a new reception and security screening zone, and improved lighting and signage to enhance accessibility.

At the Pitti Palace, the top floor will be converted into a new exhibition space. The Boboli Gardens will undergo restoration of its amphitheater, sculptures, pathways, and greenhouses. Director Simone Verde described the undertaking as an “operation of unprecedented scale and depth” intended to strengthen the institution's role as a fundamental Italian cultural icon.
