UFOP suspends classes in João Monlevade following student threats
The Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP) has temporarily suspended in-person classes at the Institute of Exact and Applied Sciences (Icea) in João Monlevade. The decision was made as a preventive security measure following a series of threats made by a student against classmates, professors, and the institute's administration.
According to university officials, the threats began in the first semester of 2026. Although the student has already been suspended by the university and is under a judicial injunction prohibiting them from entering the campus, the individual has reportedly been attempting to access the premises in violation of the court order.
Icea Director Wagner Ragi Curi Filho stated that the suspension will remain in effect until the university can guarantee total safety for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as research and extension projects. The university is currently awaiting further decisions from judicial authorities and competent law enforcement agencies.
