UFOP Symposium discusses future of European plant-based proteins
The fifth Plant Protein Symposium, organized by the Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants (UFOP), took place in Berlin on September 22, 2026. The event brought together representatives from research, trade, and the startup scene to discuss the future of European grain legumes, including fava beans, peas, sweet lupins, and soybeans.
Key discussions focused on the factors necessary for plant-based products to secure a permanent place in consumer diets. While consumer attitudes toward plant-based nutrition are generally positive, industry representatives from BILLA noted that taste, price, and quality remain the primary drivers for actual purchases.
Scientific contributions included research from the University of Bonn on the metabolic effects of legume-rich diets based on the Planetary Health Diet, and insights from the Max Rubner-Institut regarding how targeted dry fractionation can improve the raw material quality of fava beans. Experts also addressed changing consumer expectations regarding ingredient lists, texture, and flavor.
