UFPE fire destroys laboratories and 20 years of research

A major fire at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) in Recife has caused an estimated R$ 100 million in damages to equipment and infrastructure. The blaze destroyed laboratories specializing in pharmacology, genetics, and informatics, as well as the Nucleus for Research in Therapeutic Innovation.

University officials report that the fire resulted in the loss of approximately 20 years of scientific research, including biological samples, data, and work related to approximately 200 master's and doctoral theses. No casualties were reported. This incident marks the third fire at the university within a single week.

The Federal Police have launched an inquiry to determine the cause of the fire, utilizing specialized criminalistics teams. The investigation is being conducted on two fronts: identifying the origin of the flames and analyzing the events preceding the incident. Some students reported receiving threatening messages regarding potential explosions at the university prior to the fire, adding a layer of political tension to the investigation.

In response, the Ministry of Education has announced plans to construct a new 7,000-square-meter building to replace the destroyed facilities, with an estimated construction cost of R$ 28 million. Additionally, the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation has pledged R$ 40 million for the replacement of lost laboratory equipment. The Ministry of Education also committed to extending research grants for affected students to ensure the continuity of their academic work.
