UFPE professors lose positions following judicial ruling on racial quotas
A Brazilian court has annulled the appointments of two professors at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) who had been hired through racial quota systems. The judicial decision follows challenges from candidates in the general competition pool who argued that the specific departments did not meet the legal minimum of two vacancies required to trigger quota applications.
One of the affected professors, Allison Ruan, had been teaching Biotechnology Processes since February 2026 after passing both the public exam and the heteroidentification panel. Ruan reported being notified of his dismissal via the Official Gazette while already working at the institution. Another professor, Rafaela Niels, also lost her position following the ruling.
UFPE stated that the university is legally bound to comply with judicial orders and that the decision was not an administrative choice by the institution. The legal defense for the professors intends to appeal the ruling, citing concerns that the decision undermines the effectiveness of racial quota policies in public service appointments.
