UFPR project supports caiçara communities in Paraná

The Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) is leading a project titled ‘Communities on the Map: places and identities of Paranaguá Bay’ to support traditional caiçara communities in the Paraná coast. Coordinated by the Laboratory of Geoprocessing and Environmental Management (Lageamb), the initiative provides diagnostic studies for eight estuarine communities in Paranaguá, including Ilha do Teixeira, Europinha, and Ponta Oeste.

The project aims to assist in the revision of territorial plans and ensure the recognition of social, environmental, and territorial rights. By utilizing science and technology, the initiative seeks to safeguard the right to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent during environmental licensing processes, as established by ILO Convention 169. The resulting studies are intended to help residents protect their right to remain on their land and assist the Paranaguá City Hall in developing public policies tailored to the local reality.
