UFPR University Restaurant Celebrates 60th Anniversary with Low‑Cost Meals

The University Restaurant (RU) at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) marked its 60th anniversary on 5 August 2024. To commemorate the milestone, the RU offered a special menu featuring traditional stroganoff with potato sticks and a birthday cake, while maintaining its subsidised prices of R$ 0.50 for breakfast and R$ 1.30 for lunch and dinner for undergraduate students. The RU, inaugurated in 1966 and originally run by the student directory, is now operated by contracted private companies under university oversight. The celebration highlighted the RU’s long‑standing role in providing affordable, nutritious meals to generations of students, a service that has been the subject of past research on student nutrition.

The event underscored the continued importance of low‑cost university dining in Brazil, reflecting broader efforts to ensure food security for students across the country.
