Ufuk Talay faces former Sydney FC in A-League season opener

A-League Men Sydney Derby Ufuk Talay Western Sydney Wanderers Sydney FC

The A-League Men season opens with a high-stakes Sydney Derby at Allianz Stadium, featuring a significant storyline as former Sydney FC head coach Ufuk Talay returns to face his old club in the dugout of Western Sydney Wanderers.

Talay, who left Sydney FC last March, signed a two-year deal with the Wanderers. Sydney FC Sporting Director Alexander Baumjohann noted that the decision not to renew Talay’s contract for the 2026–2027 season followed a late-season collapse in the 2024–2025 campaign, despite a star-studded roster.

While Talay acknowledged the potential for a hostile reception from fans, he stated he is focused on preparing his new squad. Meanwhile, Sydney FC prepares under head coach Patrick Kisnorbo, who led the team to a Grand Final appearance last season after taking over mid-campaign.
