Uganda and South Africa announce athletics squads for 2026 Commonwealth Games

Uganda Athletics has named a 17‑member team, plus four officials, to compete in Glasgow at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. 2020 Olympic steeplechase champion Peruth Chemutai headlines the squad and will aim to improve on her 2022 bronze medal. The team also includes 2019 world‑champion Halima Nakaayi (800 m) and other veterans such as Herbert Chebet and Kenneth Kiprop. Notably, long‑distance stars Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo are absent as they transition to marathon running.

South Africa’s Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) announced a 23‑athlete athletics squad for the same Games. The roster comprises 16 men and seven women across sprints, hurdles, middle‑distance, jumps and throws, blending seasoned performers with emerging talent. The athletes will join the broader South African delegation in Glasgow, which runs from 23 July to 2 August.

Both nations are preparing to field their strongest contenders as the Commonwealth Games return to Scotland, with athletics traditionally a medal‑rich discipline for each country.
