Uganda and Burundi to deploy troops to Gaza in international stabilization force
Uganda and Burundi have reached preliminary agreements to deploy hundreds of soldiers to the Gaza Strip as part of a US-led International Stabilisation Force. Ugandan Parliament officially authorized the deployment of Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) troops on August 6, 2026, marking the first sub-Saharan African nation to join the mission.
The international force is being established under the framework of UN Security Council Resolution 2803 and is linked to President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace initiative. The mission’s objectives include training Palestinian police forces, securing borders, and managing the transition to a new civil administration in Gaza. High-level military officials from Uganda and Burundi have already met with US and Israeli representatives to review operational plans.
While Morocco has been selected to lead training efforts for the force, other potential contributors include Albania, Kosovo, and Kazakhstan. Indonesia, which had previously planned to send 8,000 personnel, has suspended its participation due to regional tensions. The deployment has sparked domestic debate in Uganda regarding strategic risks and foreign influence, even as the country pursues a candidacy for the UN Secretary-General position.
