Uganda Cabinet approves establishment of Iganga University

The Ugandan Cabinet has approved the establishment of Iganga University as a new public institution in the Busoga sub-region. This move follows the government's takeover of the former Busoga University, a private institution whose license was revoked by the National Council for Higher Education in 2017 due to issues including inadequate staff and unaccredited courses.

Iganga University will incorporate several campuses previously belonging to Busoga University, including locations in Bugiri, Namutumba, Bugabula, and Jinja. Additionally, Namasagali is designated to become a constituent college specializing in marine and fisheries studies.

The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development has been directed to provide Shs89.998 billion to fund the establishment and initial operations of the university. To finalize the process, the Ministry of Education and Sports will work with the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to prepare the necessary legal instruments, which must then receive approval from Parliament.
