Uganda court grants bail to Bobi Wine's bodyguards

The Masaka High Court in Uganda has granted bail to four civilian bodyguards attached to National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, known as Bobi Wine. The accused—Achilleo Kivumbi, Edward Ssebuwuufu (alias Eddie Mutwe), Grace Wakabi, and Gaddafi Mugumya—face charges of aggravated robbery, assault, and malicious damage to property.

The charges stem from an incident in May 2024 during the funeral of businessman Pascal Ssekasamba in Lwengo District. The group is accused of causing bodily harm to three individuals and damaging or stealing electronic devices belonging to journalists. Judge Victoria Nakintu Katamba set cash bail at 5 million shillings each, with sureties required to provide non-cash security of 50 million shillings. The accused must also surrender their passports and report to the Deputy High Court Registrar monthly.

While Wakabi and Mugumya are expected to be released upon fulfilling bail conditions, Eddie Mutwe and Kivumbi will remain in custody due to separate military-related charges currently before the Kawempe Magistrate’s Court.
