Uganda Deputy Speaker urges MPs to conduct field visits

Uganda Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has called on parliamentary committee chairpersons to conduct regular field visits to bring the institution closer to the public. Speaking at a quarterly meeting of sectoral committee chairpersons and whips in Kampala, Tayebwa stated that direct engagement with communities would strengthen oversight, improve legislative debates, and enhance Parliament’s public image.

Tayebwa emphasized that committees should visit communities to assess the implementation of government programs firsthand. He noted that the information gathered during these visits would enable members of parliament to make more informed decisions when scrutinizing ministerial policy statements. He urged legislators to ensure that field visits serve as a means of gathering practical information rather than merely producing reports.

Additionally, Tayebwa encouraged MPs to translate ‘Musevenomics’—Uganda’s homegrown economic philosophy—into practical laws and budget priorities to drive economic transformation. To support these oversight activities, Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth-Oboth has committed funds previously held under his office to parliamentary committees to ensure they are adequately resourced.
