Uganda Electoral Commission orders repeat LC1 elections

The Electoral Commission of Uganda has ordered repeat elections for Local Council One (LC1) chairpersons in several villages following disputes over the July 28 election results. The Commission stated that the decision follows complaints and petitions challenging the declared outcomes in various cells across the country.

Acting under Article 61(1)(d) of the Constitution, the Commission is exercising its mandate to ascertain results where outcomes were contested. The repeat polls will be conducted in batches, with the first scheduled for October 15, 2026, and a second batch planned for October 19, 2026.

At least 21 villages are included in the first batch of elections, with affected areas spanning the Kagadi, Kayunga, Lwengo, and Kampala districts. The Commission noted that it is still examining additional complaints and will communicate further decisions in due course.
