Uganda formally recognizes Tooro Kingdom leader

The Ugandan government has formally recognized Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the Omukama of Tooro. Following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV in August, Nyabongo was crowned on September 29, 2026, at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal. The recognition, published in the Uganda Gazette, follows the kingdom’s succession customs and is grounded in the Institution of Traditional or Cultural Leaders Act, 2011. Under Ugandan law, traditional leaders are prohibited from exercising administrative or legislative powers and must remain non-partisan.

In a related historical context, the government previously recognized the Rwenzururu Kingdom, the cultural institution of the Bakonzo people. This recognition occurred in 2009 when President Yoweri Museveni attended the coronation anniversary of King Charles Wesley Mumbere. The Rwenzururu movement, which emerged in the 1960s seeking autonomy from the Toro Kingdom, saw the 2009 decision as a major milestone for the cultural identity of the Rwenzori region.
