Uganda Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba meets Rwanda President Kagame in Kigali

Uganda’s senior army commander and presidential adviser Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba arrived in Kigali on 25 July 2026 and was received at the airport by Rwandan Defence Force chief Gen. Mubarakh Muganga and other senior officers. He met President Paul Kagame at the Urugwiro Village office, where the two discussed defence cooperation and regional security, continuing a diplomatic thaw that began after the reopening of the border in 2022. After the talks the participants played a friendly basketball game with journalist Andrew Mwenda. Kainerugaba, the son of long‑time Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and a potential successor, has made several visits to Rwanda since 2022, helping to rebuild bilateral ties after their 2019 breakdown.
