Uganda grants official burial to theatre icon Alex Mukulu

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has granted an official burial to Alex Edward Kabangala Mukulu, a veteran playwright, actor, director, and musician. The announcement was made by Milly Babalanda, the Minister for the Presidency, who stated the government directed a befitting send-off to recognize Mukulu’s significant contributions to the performing arts industry.

Mukulu died on August 15, 2026, at the age of 72 at Kiruddu Hospital following liver complications. His career spanned nearly five decades, during which he became a central figure in Ugandan theatre, using his work to explore the nation’s society, politics, and culture.

The official burial is scheduled for August 20, 2026, in Kijabijjo, Gayaza. A National Organising Committee is currently working with the bereaved family to finalize the arrangements.
