Uganda High Court nullifies Gomba East MP election
The High Court in Mpigi has nullified the election of Godfrey Ssaazi, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate for Gomba East Member of Parliament. Justice Jamson Karemani declared the parliamentary seat vacant and ordered the Electoral Commission to organize a fresh election.
The ruling follows an election petition filed by National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Henry Kirumira Harris Kalule. Kalule challenged Ssaazi’s victory, which originally saw him declared the winner with 10,907 votes against Kalule’s 9,156.
The court found that the destruction of electoral materials at nine polling stations substantially affected the integrity of the January 15, 2026, election. While the judge noted that the omission of results from four specific polling stations would not have changed the ultimate winner, the destruction of materials at other stations was deemed significant enough to warrant a new poll.
