Uganda implements new regulations for international schools and teacher training
The Ugandan Ministry of Education and Sports is implementing new regulations to tighten oversight of the education sector. International schools will now be required to choose a specific licensing path. Institutions wishing to offer both foreign and national curricula must meet the distinct standards for both and maintain separate registrations to prevent schools from misrepresenting themselves to parents.
Additionally, the Ministry has announced that teacher training will be centralized under the jurisdiction of the Uganda National Institute for Teacher Education (UNITE). While intended to standardize quality, the move has raised concerns regarding potential teacher shortages. Critics argue that UNITE’s five existing campuses may be insufficient to serve the nation’s 40,000 schools, potentially creating geographical barriers for educators in remote regions.
