Uganda implements rapid DNA technology for forensic investigations

Uganda has introduced rapid DNA testing capacity to enhance forensic science capabilities, specifically for criminal investigations and disaster victim identification. The development was announced during the inaugural graduation events of the National Forensic Sciences University (India), Uganda Campus, in collaboration with ThermoFisher Scientific HID.

A two-day workshop, the first of its kind in Africa, was held in September 2026 to demonstrate real-time DNA test results. The initiative aims to provide scientific evidence in cases such as murder, sexual assault, and paternity disputes, particularly when eyewitness testimony is unavailable.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Andrew Mubiru of the Uganda Police Force noted that these techniques are essential for linking suspects to crime scenes and strengthening legal prosecutions. The training is intended to benefit students and professionals from across East Africa, including members of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces.
