Uganda intensifies anti-corruption crackdown on public funds
Uganda is intensifying its crackdown on corruption following directives from President Yoweri Museveni to strengthen accountability in government programs. The State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU) reports that Shs22.7 billion in funds is currently under investigation due to corruption-related complaints. The ongoing ‘Expose the Corrupt’ campaign has led to the arrest of 267 suspects, the interdiction of 253 officials, and the arraignment of nearly 40 accused persons.
Separately, the Inspectorate of Government (IG) announced it has recovered over Shs41 billion through its anti-corruption efforts and interventions in public complaints. The IG also recommended the payment of Shs2.35 billion to individuals denied employment benefits.
These efforts involve a multi-agency approach including the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. The Inspectorate of Government plans to hold Ombuds clinics across its 16 regional offices in October to resolve citizen complaints regarding delayed salaries, pensions, irregular recruitment, and difficulties accessing government services such as land titles and passports.
