Uganda launches fertiliser distribution to boost farm productivity

The Ugandan Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) has launched a distribution programme for 173,913 bags of fertiliser to enhance agricultural productivity and restore soil fertility. Implemented under a Presidential Directive, the initiative targets farmers engaged in high-value agricultural enterprises, specifically coffee, tea, and cocoa.

The fertiliser, supplied by ITRACOM Fertilizers Uganda, aims to address the country’s low fertiliser usage rates. MAAIF Permanent Secretary Maj. Gen. David Kasura-Kyomukama noted that Uganda currently uses approximately 2–3 kilogrammes of fertiliser per hectare, significantly lower than the continental average of 22 kilogrammes.

Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze emphasized the transition toward precision agriculture, urging farmers to adopt evidence-based practices such as soil testing. He stated that farmers must apply the correct inputs in the right quantities and at the appropriate times to achieve higher yields and improved incomes.
