Uganda Law Society leaders urge defense of civil liberties
Legal leaders in Uganda are calling for increased protection of civil liberties and the rule of law. During the Digital Transformation Festival, retired Justice Fredrick Egonda-Ntende urged the Uganda Law Society (ULS) to proactively defend citizens against human rights violations, including torture, as technology changes how people interact with the state.
In a separate address during the Annual Rule of Law Week, Uganda Law Society President Isaac Ssemakadde spoke from exile regarding the state of justice in the country. Ssemakadde, who noted he was addressing the lecture from abroad following a conviction in absentia, characterized the current situation as a collapse of the justice system where citizens lack equal protection before the law and security of livelihood.
