Uganda leads Africa in organic farming with USD 225.7 million in exports
Uganda has emerged as Africa’s largest organic farming producer, with the organic agriculture sector recording approximately USD 225.7 million in exports in 2025. According to data from the National Organic Agricultural Movement of Uganda (NOGAMU), the number of certified organic farmers grew from 211,584 in 2018 to 744,288 in 2025, representing an average annual growth rate of 19.7 per cent.
These farmers cultivate roughly 930,360 hectares of certified organic farmland, positioning Uganda among the world’s top three countries by the number of certified organic farmers. The country’s organic products are exported to various international markets, including the European Union, the United States, and Japan.
To capitalize on this growth, Uganda will host Africa’s first Organic and Nature Expo (ONE) from November 4 to 7, 2026, in Kampala. The event will run alongside the fifth National Organic Week (NOW) and is expected to attract over 2,000 participants, including investors, policymakers, and exporters. NOGAMU Chief Executive Chariton Namuwoza noted that global supply chain disruptions have also spurred domestic investment in organic fertilizers and biopesticides.
