Uganda legal actions target theft and infrastructure negligence
Two separate legal cases involving allegations of financial misconduct and negligence have emerged in Uganda.
In Kampala, a magistrate's court denied bail to Medi Mubiru, a former sales manager for Byter Agriculture Uganda Limited. Mubiru is accused of stealing approximately Shs 294.6 million in money and goods from the Chinese-owned company between 2023 and 2026. The prosecution claims to have evidence including banking records, mobile-money transactions, and WhatsApp messages in which Mubiru allegedly admitted to the offense. He has been remanded to Luzira Prison.
In Bundibugyo District, engineer Muhindo Bithi Robert has been charged by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit for causing financial loss to the government. Prosecutors allege that Muhindo failed to conduct essential soil-bearing capacity tests during the construction of a Shs 115 million bridge on the Tokwe-Kanyamwirima-Hakitara Road. This omission allegedly led to the bridge's collapse. Muhindo remains in custody until September 25, 2026.
