Uganda military dismisses allegations and addresses opposition arrest
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has dismissed social media allegations made by Lt Col Herbert Matanda Mabonga, labeling them as unsubstantiated claims involving forgeries and doctored images. The military stated that Mabonga, a former junior officer with the Chieftaincy of Defence Intelligence and Security, is currently a deserter. He reportedly failed to report to his new assignment in Fort Portal in April 2026 and is wanted for criminal offenses, including extortion and fraudulent land transactions.
In a separate development, Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba commented on the arrest of opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye. Muhoozi characterized Besigye’s legal troubles as divine punishment, alleging that Besigye insulted the military and plotted against President Yoweri Museveni. Besigye is currently facing treason charges following an arrest in Kenya in 2024, which he has denied.
