Uganda begins military withdrawal from Somalia
Uganda has commenced the withdrawal of its troops from Somalia, marking the end of nearly two decades of military involvement in the country. Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced the decision, stating that Uganda aims to complete a full withdrawal by August 1, 2027.
Ugandan forces have been active in Somalia since March 2007, initially serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to combat the Al-Shabaab insurgency. The withdrawal follows shifts in international support, including decisions by the United States to reduce financial and logistical assistance to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
While Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud previously requested a delay in the withdrawal to allow local forces more time to prepare, the Ugandan military maintains its timeline to hand over security responsibilities to Somali forces.
